The problem with EV utes: What PM Anthony Albanese doesn't seem to understand
It's time somebody politely set Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese straight on the issue of battery electric utes. They won’t sell in numbers here for a long time. Here’s why…
You just cannot buy an electric ute in Australia - they're called facts
In my opinion, we can all agree that Albo is a substantial upgrade over that lying incompetent megalo-maniacal Pentacostal who preceded him. So that's good for us; he does seem to be sincere, albeit a plodder acting in the national interest. So that's nice.
I'm a fan of Albo, but I don't want to give him endless free kicks when he stuffs something up, which he did during his National Press Club address on the 28th of August in Canberra.
Now, the National Press Club is a kind of suck fest between people like industry group leaders or politicians who get invited to come and have a little chat with the press.
Mr Albanese was having a shot at the Coalition for telling people that you can't buy an electric ute but unfortunately - you can't. It’s a fact.
So let's look at why you can’t buy one right now (or for the immediate future) and let's look at why you're not going to be able to buy an electric ute - or at least a decent electric ute - for a reasonable price, for the foreseeable future.

We're talking about available technology and implementing it, to do the kind of work that Australians want to do. The PM went on this kind of extended rant which was essentially evangelising the global transition away from internal combustion and towards battery-electric vehicles, like there weren't any impediments to work out.
Unfortunately, there are several, but one which is the key problem. These are the kinds of technical problems that, I’m tipping, are the real reason the Tesla Semi is still a prototype (and always will be) and why they can’t make the Cybertruck.
