I listen to you on Radio 2UE overnight and thought I would contact you about a new car I want to buy early next year. Some questions - I have a 2004 Honda CRV sport with 172,000km- should I trade in or sell?
I want another car like a CRV and Iam looking at the RAV 4 and Santa Fe. I would like to buy a model that is 1-2 years old, so a 2012 or 2013 model. I have a family of 5 with 3 kids (6, 8, 11). Occasionally I tow a trailer with rubbish to the tip. Whenever we go out as a family we would go in this car. We don't go off road, but I like sitting higher than in a normal sedan. We would take this car on any holidays we went on. I drive this car to work (40km per day return trip). I do approx. 22,000km per year
I guess that's about it ... what car would you recommend?
Trade-in or Sell Privately?
Sell privately, every time. Why? You'll get more money. (Search Redbook here for trade-in versus private sale prices.) Also, without a trade-in, the used-car dealer can't use an overly inflated trade-in price as leverage over the sale (they often inflate the trade, and then say there's no room to move on the new vehicle).
Honda CR-V Vs Toyota RAV4 Vs Hyundai Santa Fe?
Santa Fe (latest model shape). Every time. Five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty - good for you, as an above-average kilometre driver, and one who apparently hangs onto his cars. Brilliant diesel engine. Great value for money. Great build quality. Very well appointed. (Shop it against Kia Sorento - essentially the same vehicle, since Hyundai and Kia are the same company.)
The Japanese cars can't match the Santa Fe on warranty or value.
Santa Fe also has a brilliant seven-seat arrangement where the third row folds completely flat, leaving you with a flat cargo floor and a large cargo space.
Hope this helps.
