Toyota Loses Dodgy Diesel DPF Appeal (Compensation Update)
The Federal Court of Australia recently rammed an industrial strength decision up Toyota regarding its appeal over that nasty dodgy DPF business a few years ago and the company's misleading, deceptive conduct generally, at the time. So that's nice. But that’s only half the story…
Toyota Australia has pie on its face following the Federal Court telling it to jam its appeal firmly where His Royal Highness does not wash. You could make a movie out of this one, only it might not be credible.
To have been a fly on the wall for the inevitable conference call back to Japan on this one, because on the one hand you'd have the conversation to Toshi San about the admission about being told to ‘shove it’, so to speak, relation to the appeal.
And then on the other hand, you've got the good news about the cost-saving, whereby potentially $2.3 billion worth of compensation that gets sprayed all over the owners of those defective Toyota vehicles, which has just been reduced to 1.3 billion.
So, if you’re unfamiliar with this story, perhaps we should take you to the beginning of this saga.
If you own one of these shitboxes (2.8-litre diesel Hilux, Fortuner or Prado) and you want to know what this means for you, about a year ago in April of 2022, the Federal Court of Australia found that Toyota Australia was misleading or deceptive in how it handled and responded to customers with those appalling DPFs.
This issue orbits 264,170 vehicles with dodgy DPFs and most of them have that appalling 2.8 litre diesel engine that the intern could have done a better job with the DPF integration of.

Aggregate damages was $2.3 billion and this was based on the diminution of value on average of those vehicles being 17.5 per cent, attributable to the poor R&D integration of the DPF system. But someone wearing a wig, while at the same time as dismissing the appeal, reduced the value.
Find out by how much by watching the full report. But it’s what Toyota said in its June 2022 appeal that is the most entertaining, to say the least.
