Olight Warrior Ultra Torture Test: Freeze It, Drop It, Drive Over It
How tough is the Olight Warrior Ultra?
There is one reasonably effective way to find out.
Take a brand-new one, freeze it solid in ice for three days, repeatedly drop it onto concrete from heights exceeding its official test rating — then drive over it with a ute.
That is essentially what I did.
The result was not quite indestructibility. I did eventually manage to damage the Warrior Ultra.
But it took considerably more abuse than any torch should encounter during several lifetimes of normal use.

First: freeze it solid for 72 hours
The first test was straightforward.
I submerged the Warrior Ultra in water and froze the whole thing into a solid block of ice for 72 hours.
This gives us a fairly unreasonable combination of prolonged cold, moisture and physical stress before the torch has even encountered the more destructive testing.
After three days, I liberated it from the ice and checked whether it still worked.
It did.
So naturally, the next sensible step was dropping it repeatedly onto concrete.

A manufacturer's drop-test rating gives you a useful indication of durability under controlled conditions.
I was less interested in reproducing the laboratory test perfectly than answering a more practical question:
What happens if this thing gets subjected to repeated, real-world abuse substantially beyond what it was designed to withstand?
So I dropped it.
Again.
And again.
And again.
There were dozens of impacts in total, including numerous drops from heights exceeding the Warrior Ultra's official rating.
Unsurprisingly, the exterior began accumulating the cosmetic evidence.
What mattered was whether the torch itself continued operating.
And it did.
Then I drove over it with the ute
At some point you have to stop pretending this is a normal durability test.
So I put the Warrior Ultra underneath the tyre of my ute and drove over it.
That finally achieved something meaningful.
The load damaged the torch's barrel-mounted switch, causing partial loss of functionality.
In other words: I eventually managed to break it.
Sort of.
Because the Warrior Ultra still wasn't completely dead.
Back to the bench
After the run-over test, I pulled the Warrior Ultra apart on the bench to investigate the damage and see what could be recovered.
I managed to resurrect significant functionality.
Despite the accumulated abuse, the torch retained operation through the tail switch, including tactical functions, maximum-output operation and the proximity-sensing system.
And after that?
More drop testing.
Because apparently we had not yet made the point sufficiently clear.
By the end of the experiment, the Warrior Ultra had experienced the equivalent of an absurd amount of physical abuse.
It was battered.
It was damaged.
But it was still substantially functional.
Is the Olight Warrior Ultra indestructible?
No.
Nothing is.
Apply enough force in the wrong place and eventually you will break virtually any portable electronic device.
That is not really the interesting result here.
The useful question is how much abuse the product can tolerate before meaningful failure occurs.
And in this case, the answer appears to be: quite a lot.
Freezing it for 72 hours did not stop it.
Repeated concrete impacts did not stop it.
Repeated drops from beyond its rated height did not stop it.
Driving over it finally damaged one of the controls — but even then, substantial functionality remained.
That is a much more useful demonstration of durability than simply reading a specification off the box.
Do you actually need this level of toughness?
Probably not.
And that is arguably the point.
Nobody should routinely freeze a torch into a block of ice, hurl it onto concrete dozens of times or park a ute on it.
Normal ownership is vastly less demanding.
A serious torch is more likely to get dropped in the workshop, knocked around in a toolbox, left in the vehicle, used in bad weather or subjected to the occasional piece of accidental abuse.
The Warrior Ultra survived conditions far beyond that.
So while this test does not prove that the thing is impossible to kill, it does provide some fairly persuasive evidence that normal use is unlikely to trouble it very much.

The Ultra range contains several quite different torches aimed at different jobs, so I would choose according to the way you actually intend to use the thing rather than simply buying the biggest lumen number available.
