Should I Buy a Hyundai Santa Fe or a Nissan Pathfinder?

2015 Hyundai Santa Fe SR - due for release in Q1, 2015

I have a trade-in 2008 VW Touareg 3.0-litre diesel - quoted $22,000 on the trade-in. I'm looking at the Hyundai Santa Fe with the following options & accessories:

  • colour titanium silver
  • tow pack
  • side steps
  • bonnet and front light protector
  • side visors
  • mats for three rows

Can you give me some advice please? Stacey.

Hello Stacey, the Hyundai Santa Fe is a great SUV - easily a good substitute for an ageing Volkswagen Touareg. The Hyundai Santa Fe model range has just been upgraded with new equipment for 2015. (Hyundai Santa Fe Highlander gets - among other things - automatic reverse parking. Santa Fe Highlander and Elite models also get electric tailgate opening/closure for 2015. A new even more highly specified model - the Hyundai Santa Fe SR - is due for release in the first quarter of 2015.)

Let me get Ben from the brokerage to call you ASAP to help make sure you get the lowest possible price on the new Hyundai. Ben can also help you get a good trade-in on the VW and assist with low-rate finance.

2015 Nissan Pathfinder

Dear John, thank-you for responding to my email and your advice.  We went and test drove a 2015 Hyundai Sante Fe which we really liked but then also looked at the Nissan Pathfinder St-L and Ti models.

I appreciate the Nissan is dearer and no diesel option but the extra space (my family is tall) and finishing was an added bonus.  I would be grateful for your opinion on the Nissan Pathfinder.  The Hybrid Nissan is not an option as the towing capacity is less than the Sante Fe and petrol Nissan.

I look forward to your reply. Regards, Stacey

Hello again Stacey, there’s absolutely no issue with the Nissan that I know of. If you prefer it, then go for it. No reason not to - you have already identified the no-diesel and price disparities. The Nissan has a 3yr/100,000km warranty while the Hyundai has a 5yr/unlimited-km warranty with capped-price service for the life of the vehicle and also 10 years of free roadside assistance.

The Nissan is somewhat more rugged for harder off-road driving as well obviously this is only a benefit if you do that). Nissan also has greater maximum (with trailer brakes) towing capacity too: 2700kg versus Hyundai’s 2000kg.

I wouldn’t buy a hybrid if my life depended upon it. And not just for the tow capacity reason. Hybrids are a joke - on you, if you buy one.

Personal preference is a large proportion of buying a vehicle - if the Nissan suits you better then it’s a good choice. Ben can assist you with getting a good price on a Pathfinder just as easily. Good luck with the decision!
