Adapting to a dual-clutch transmission (DCT/DSG) from manual or auto

QUESTION

Hi there John,

I've recently moved to a 7-speed DCT after driving manuals for the last 30 years.

In ‘Sport’ mode, the downshifts feel about right, but the revs required for an upshift are a bit of overkill for the school run.

In ‘Comfort’ mode, it's the opposite. It feels like it doesn't gear-down enough and relies too much on the brakes. I feel like I need to gear-down using the paddle shifters, but I’m not sure if this puts undue strain on the engine/clutch. I’m unsure whether it might be a better trade-off to let the DCT do it's thing at the expense of the brakes.
