The Hyundai ix35 is Hyundai’s smallest 4WD. The Hyundai ix35 is a twin under the skin with the Kia Sportage. Although they compete fiercely in Australia, behind the scenes Hyundai and Kia are joined at the head, just like Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda, or Toyota and Lexus.
Both Hyundai and Kia offer an outstanding warranty – five years and unlimited kilometers.
The South Koreans have done a great job lifting their game recently. If you haven’t driven a new Hyundai or Kia lately, you’ll be surprised just how well they’re put together, and how comprehensively equipped and affordable they are.
The Japanese brands are more than a bit worried by the South Korean ‘value for money’ proposition exemplified in cars like the Hyundai ix35.
There are three engines available in the Hyundai ix35 range: 2.0-litre and 2.4-litre petrol, and a hi-tech 2.0-litre diesel – and here, the diesel is the pick. The smaller petrol engine in the Hyundai ix35 is anorexic, and comes only with a front-wheel drive powertrain. The Hyundai ix35 2.4 petrol comes with all-wheel drive and a fantastic six-speed auto, but it can’t match the performance of the diesel. You pay a $3000 premium for the Hyundai ix35 diesel, but in this case, you get what you pay for. The Hyundai ix35 diesel is backed by the same brilliant six-speed auto as the Hyundai ix35 2.4, but delivers the kind of fuel economy a Commodore or Falcon can only fantasize about.
If you’re considering the Hyundai ix35 diesel, just make sure you’ll be driving at least once a fortnight on the freeway for at least half an hour, otherwise the exhaust particle filter system might not get the chance to heat up and regenerate. If that happens, the engine could wind up in ‘limp home’ mode, which is just what it sounds like. If it happens to you, you’ll need to make an inconvenient, unscheduled pit-stop at a dealership.
And that means, if you’re not planning any regular open-road driving, the 2.4-litre petrol Hyundai ix35 could be the best bet – for you.
There are three Hyundai ix35 model grades: active, elite and highlander. The highlander comes fully loaded with a panorama glass roof, rear-view camera, leather upholstery and 18-inch alloys, but even the base model ‘active’ Hyundai ix35 gets Bluetooth for phone and music, plus parking sensors, and steering wheel buttons for the cruise control and audio system. It’s a lot of equipment for the money.
If you’re in the market for a compact SUV like the ix35, you’re drowning in choice. It’s a very congested segment. Make sure you test drive the Kia Sportage. Even though it’s essentially the same thing under the skin, Kia’s done a sensational job on the detail design and the suspension setup. You should also check out the Nissan X-trail, especially if you want a little bit extra cargo carrying capacity. Another hot property in small SUVs is the Volkswagen Tiguan – which is more expensive but adds a dash of European cachet. And, if you want something a little smaller, check out the Subaru XV, which offers the versatility of an SUV in a package the same size as a small car.
