I need a full-size 4X4 dual-cab pick-up truck: What should I buy?
QUESTION
Hi John,
I'm a big tall bloke and am tired of the usual dual-cab utes on offer because of driver space and comfort. I'm currently driving a Hilux which is great, but tight for me especially on long trips.
I really want to like the RAM, but have been hesitant because of what you (and other professionals that I respect) have said in the past regarding critical mass for parts, possible reliability issues and quality of dealer support and warranty. Also RAM was new to the Aussie market and I learned not to be the R&D guinea pig a very long time ago.
Well, RAM has been around a few years now, and while I haven't seen or heard any complaints or negative reviews out there, I am interested to know if you have any feedback come through and also possibly update the parts, warranty and reliability issues - if you have access to such information.
Also, I am aware that although RAM Australia does their left-to-right conversions in Melbourne, there is another independent factory in Brendale, Brisbane that also does the conversion. How would this affect warranty?
I spoke to RAM Australia about this at a recent mobile thunderbox show. I could tell they were not happy and quick to point out they were the only authorised supplier into Australia of right-hand drive vehicles.
Thanks for your advice,
Big Vic

ANSWER
Hey Big Vic,
I understand the appeal, but RAM is the unholy alliance of poor support: It’s a Stellantis brand (Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, etc.) imported in this case by Ateco (renowned also for poor support).
Frankly, most US utes are sex with a supermodel - the fantasy is the best part. The reality, not so much. My standard advice is: Ateco or Stellantis: Don’t buy it.
The Brendale operation is probably an independent, low-volume thing. Good luck getting top-level support Australia-wide there.
For that kind of money, would you perhaps be better off in an Iveco Daily 4X4? (Specs brochure PDF here >>) Or the Isuzu NPR 4X4 >> or Hino 300 4X4 >>
These things are huge, and hugely capable.
