How should I fit a transmission oil cooler to my Toyota Prado?
QUESTION
Hi John,
I have been watching your YouTube posts with great interest, as I do enjoy your approach to things and your explanations are easy for common folk to follow.
My enquiry is about aftermarket transmission oil coolers. (I have watched your presentation about these).

I was wondering if there is any real difference weather it is fitted in series prior to or after the radiator transmission cooler. As there would be a much larger temp differential of the oil on exit from the transmission to the aftermarket cooler, than from the radiator cooler to the aftermarket cooler.
I have tried to find an answer online, however they are all pretty vague.

Kim

ANSWER
Kim,
The aftermarket cooler will bleed off more heat if it’s installed before the radiator. Heat loss is proportional to the difference in temperature between the oil and the environment.
Also, if you do it like this, it will heat up the water in the radiator less than if you install it after. (That’s probably the biggest advantage right there - taking the load off the engine cooling system.)
Pretty simple concept - but not surprising the typical beard-stroking internet forum dipshits can’t figure it out.
