What Car Should I Replace My Holden Cruze With?

Hi John, I have a 2011 Holden Cruze CDX. Last of the imported ones. I know you don't like them but until now I have been quite happy with it, except for the auto transmission gear changing, but it has recently developed an auto transmission oil leak and has been back twice to the dealer to rectify but is still leaking. They have renewed the driveshaft seal twice already under warranty even though the car was about six weeks out of warranty when I brought it to their attention,  so I cant really complain about their service. I will take it back again for them to look at. Are you aware of this type of problem?

However, it might be time to buy a new car. But what to get? I like the leather heated seats, auto door locking, auto headlights and the other bells and whistles that the cruze had for the price I paid $23,000. What other similar sized cars are comparable to these levels of creature comforts for say under $26,000? Regards, Robert

Hello Robert,

Firstly, no I don't like the Cruze, but I'm glad yours has been fairly problem-free.

The leak can doubtless be solved, but first they will need to find it. Einstein said the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result, so hopefully next time they'll replace something other than the driveshaft oil seal...

Whether the warranty has technically expired or not is kind of irrelevant here. What matters is the reasonable life of the component. Here's some more on this aspect of Australian consumer law. Just have a read of the answer.

Seriously I think I can get you down to a short list of one car: the Hyundai i30. At that pricepoint you will get all that the Cruze gave you and two more years' warranty (and a better design/construction standard.

Let me get Ben from the brokerage to call you to discuss acquiring one at the lowest possible price. That's what he does. You can toss around your acquisition timeframe as well. But do yourself a favour and test-drive the i30. See also my video on negotiating with a car dealer.

I hope this helps.
