Is buying a dealer's cancelled car order a good idea?

QUESTION

Pajero rear.JPG

Hi John,

I’m looking at a 2020 Pajero at the moment. It’s a special deal brought about due to a cancelled 'rental company' fleet order.

In a nutshell, it’s a 2020 GLS $52,990 driveaway. I am struggling with the fact that although it is a cancelled order, the paperwork (receipt for deposit to hold vehicle) says it is 'used'. And then next to ‘Rego’ it says: Z98761/unreg.

Also, the current 10-year warranty doesn't apply, only five years (to do with the cancelled order somehow) but from your recent Mitsubishi warranty video that isn't a drama.
I am just not sure if we are buying a new, used or demo vehicle. Insurance says we lose the 'old for new' if its classed as used. But apart from that, is the $6000 saving worth it long-term?

I’d appreciate your opinion.

Thanks,

Joslyn

Interesting question Joslyn,

You’d have to get the dealer to clarify this for you, but if the deal went ahead to the extent that they registered it in the name of the rental company, and then the rental company backed out, then technically it is a used car, even though it has never actually been used.

It would be a demo if previously registered to the dealer, and a new car is never previously registered. I don’t see how this makes a material difference to you - aside from warranty as you’ve noted already.

As to the $6k off - it seems like a fair reduction. It’s not like you’re giving all that much away.

USEFUL LINKS FOR DOING THE DEAL

Also, I think you’ll be happy with the Pajero - it’s quite underrated and pretty good at the whole off-roading/touring thing. It’s old, but a pretty reliable, capable beast, so there’s that.

All the best with it. Let me know how it goes.
