More than 200 Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric vehicles will arrive in Australia in days - possibly before you finished watching this video or reading this article.

Hyundai Australia is a bit non-specific as to the actual quantity, but this is the model-year 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV which has been essentially not on sale due to there being none to sell.

If you’re wondering about buying an EV or desperately waiting to buy the unicorn Ioniq 5, you can download a PDF version of the entire press kit here >>

I've just spent a week driving a model year 22 version, and I crawled all over Ioniq 5 when it first arrived in Australia, but I have not yet driven it until a week ago.

But they're going to need the jaws of life to get me out of it, basically, because although I find the exterior a bit quirky, you look at it from afar and it kinda suggests ‘small hatch’ to your brain. That’s until you walk up to it and realise the wheelbase is longer than a LandCruiser. It really is disconcerting when you get up close because it's fairly big (compared to actual small hatchbacks), but the proportions are more compact hatch-like.

The new models will be called ‘Dynamiq’ for the entry-level model, and an ‘Epiq’ which is now the flagship of the range.

Epiq is the really interesting development, but sadly there won't be any arriving with the new allocation of Ioniq 5 stock.

Now, where Hyundai has teased “more power”, I think what they’ve done is put the slightly upgraded battery out of the Kia EV6 into the Ioniq 5, because they run on the same platform under HMG (Hyundai Motor Group). I could stand to be corrected on that, but reading in between the lines, that’s how it reads to me.

2023 Ioniq 5 will arrive in a three model lineup with features including digital side mirrors, a high efficiency heat pump system, and battery conditioning.

Now, if you’re into the technical side of an EV, the heat pump thing should be of interest because in a combustion car you've got ridiculous amounts like heat wastage, something like 50 percent - ballpark. Heating in a cold environment is such an energy intensive process and this is a real problem with these vehicles, inherently. So a high efficiency heat pump thing is a big deal.

Flat floor, more range, heaps of legroom and luggage space - a practical EV.

Hyundai Australia says all models receive this bigger 77.4 kilowatt-hour battery, which is freaking huge when you think about it - it’s a massive battery.

The driving range is increased both in the rear-wheel drive and the all-wheel drive powertrains which now deliver more power.

There’s an extended two-year/30,000 kilometer service intervals (whichever comes first), a revised ride and handling package as well.

I'd be interested to know the detail on this EV’s suspension tuning down the track; whether they actually did local tuning or if they were forced to give us something close to it.

The 2023 Ioniq 5 range is arriving in October priced from $72,000.
